In a reference to 2 Samuel 21:1-14, Tennyson tells a haunting story in verse about a mother who cares for the exposed body of her executed son. On Mother's Day it is worth remembering that some mothers may have unhappy children, or children in prison, or children who have done terrible things. Their steadfast mother's love, which cannot solve all the questions, is a pointer to God's mercy and steadfast love. Remember Psalm 103:8; "The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy."
